Surf Life Saving SA

Member Development

Surf Lifesaving conducts many programs to enhance members' personal development and leadership skills and knowledge. There are several programs conducted however major annual programs are as follows:

Surf Life Saving SA Programs:

Annually Surf Life Saving SA conducts leadership and development camps that are available to all members from the age 10 to 25. The camps provide the opportunity for young members to be exposed to the many elements of Surf Life Saving. Additionally the camps encompass team building, personal development and leadership based elements.

Participants are exposed to a variety of sessions that are designed to challenge them personally and in a team concept. The purpose is to provide Surf Life Saving with a broader base of future leaders. The camps are a process to facilitate this development and ensure that the future of Surf Life Saving is guaranteed by providing participants with the opportunity and tools to become more involved and effective within the environment that as leaders they will have to work within. The programs will provide the opportunity for participants to learn something about each other and themselves.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CAMP TO HAWAII : EOI'S NOW OPEN - JULY 2012

Melissa Millsteed from the Somerton SLSC and current State Team Manager is seeking expressions of interest from proficient registered lifesavers to be a part of an SLSSA endorsed surf lifesaving tour to the Hawaiian Islands of Kauai & Oahu in the 2012 July school holiday period.

The county of Kauai conduct Junior Lifeguard programs over their summer school holidays which Melissa would like to join in with by taking a group of keen lifesavers aged between 14 & 17 to train & compete with some of the Kauai Junior Lifeguards, and visit some of the most famous surf beaches in the world.

At this point in time we are seeking around 10-15 members who would like to spend 7-10 days in Hawaii over the July 2012 school holidays (dates to be confirmed). If there is enough interest we will proceed.

PLEASE NOTE: This trip will be predominantlyuser paysand the final cost will depend on the number of participants and assistants going.  We are aiming to have the cost at around $3000 for airfares, accommodation & transport & hopefully some meals or sightseeing.

This opportunity is available to any member aged between 14 & 17 as of July 2012.  The only requirement we have is that all team members must be proficient in SRC or Bronze Medallion and met all your Club commitments in 2011/12.  You do not need to be the best competitor but must be a keen, dedicated and committed surf lifesaver.

If there is enough interest we will hold an information session to discuss the trip in more details in January.

If you would like any further information before the information session, please do not hesitate to contact Melissa Millsteed:  0407 722 856 or email:  mel.millsteed@gmail.com

Sir Adrian Curlewis Scholarship - Applications Closed

Congratulations to CHRIS PARSONS from the Brighton SLSC who is the Sir Adrian Curlewis Scholar for 2010/11

The Sir Adrian Curlewis Scholarship is a national program that is designed to build leadership skills, knowledge, and highlight the potential in young Australians who choose to pursue leadership roles in surf lifesaving at club, regional, state and national level. The program provides candidates with an environment within which they can discover their leadership potential under the guidance and mentoring of active leaders in surf lifesaving.

This scholarship provides the recipients with a 12-month structured mentoring program through a 'contract learning agreement'. This agreement focuses on some key areas that the participant feels they need to improve in their personal leadership skills. This mentoring program is preceded with a 4 day induction program where scholars are able to develop a greater awareness of their leadership strengths.

National Leadership College - 29th Jan - 4th Feb 2012 to be held in Sydney

Click here for more information and the Application Form Applications NOW CLOSED

Congratulations to Sam Taylor (North Haven) and Hayley Watkins (Grange)

The National Leadership College is the accumulation of year on year development of the nationally delivered leadership program. The focus of the national program has moved from a 'camp' to a 'conference' to what is now a 'college'.

The college assumes participants come into it with some previous exposure to leadership training, preferably from within the surf life saving leadership pathway, but it could also come from their careers outside of surf. The college philosophy is 'interactive shared learning' and relates SLSA's leadership competencies to grass roots surf life saving. This is achieved through key note speakers and a focus on facilitator lead workshops.

Potential participants can come from a range of different backgrounds, interests and areas of focus within the club environment - although it is preferable that they have been involved in previous state leadership training. These future leaders are most likely patrol captains, chief instructors, club captains, age managers etc.

Leaders Conference

The aim of the Leaders Conference is to provide an opportunity for existing leaders within SLSA (at all levels) to participate in a high-level leadership development program, with a particular target of club presidents. It is aimed at leaders in the 30+ age category and will be very useful for leaders who have a limited surf lifesaving background and those leaders who have re-entered the organization after an extended period of absence. The conference will provide participants with an environment that will enable them to refresh and extend their leadership capabilities.

Leadership Network

The leadership Network is a new concept to SLSA. It is being developed to provide an ongoing support network for those members who participate in national leadership programs such as the Leaders Conference, Sir Adrian Curlewis Scholarship and National Leadership College.

The Leadership Network will work like an alumni, where members can share experiences, knowledge and ideas in a likeminded environment. It is envisaged the network will be chiefly brought together through a bi-annual e-newsletter that communicates the latest thinking in areas of leadership, management and areas directly related to surf life saving.

Forum Series

The SLSA Forum series was formally established in 2007, following a number of successful National Youth Forum's (2003-2006) and a National Women's Forum (2006). These forums have been designed to provide an opportunity for like minded surf lifesavers to share their experiences and for Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) to develop a core base of issues based leaders and advocates. The forum identifies a key issue or target group each year. The forum is a program that also involves other components such as leadership development, team building and lots of fun! The 2010 Forum focussed on 14 - 17 Year membership involving associated Program Coordinators and was about engaging those who are already active in the topic area and can contribute to the development of good practices that can then be shared.  Stay tuned for the 2011 Forum...
