'On the Same Wave'
'On the Same Wave' (OTSW) is a partnership between the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA). This program has recently been bolstered by grants from the State Government and Newman's Own Foundation.
The program will include communities and surf clubs across Australia and is being introduced into South Australia through SLSSA after a successful pilot program in NSW.

OTSW will fundamentally work towards increasing relationships, respect and understanding between the broader community and those already familiar with Surf Life Saving and its associated activities. It will work with people from all backgrounds however the program is currently focussed on youth with a culturally and/or linguistically diverse (CALD) background and indigenous communities.
OTSW aims to increase Surf Life Saving's understanding, openness
and responsiveness to cultural diversity and ultimately hopes to
increase membership diversity within clubs. To facilitate this, a
cultural awareness program is being provided for staff and
volunteer members along with access to suitable resources for use
within Surf Life Saving at the Club level to assist attract and
retain new members from these communities.
OTSW also aims to ensure everyone who uses the beach or swims in
the surf is safe by providing a range of promotional information
and resources, surf safety programs and SLS award training to
community groups as relevant. This will also help increase the
understanding of this iconic Australian pastime its associated
lifesaving activities.
OTSW will vary from information provision to training to be a Surf
Life Saver and delivery of the program will depend on the person or
community group and their identified requirements. It can initially
be provided as part of an established educational curriculum or by
SLSSA away from the beach in community halls or classrooms and then
on the beach or in a surf club.
Participation in the program does not necessitate joining Surf Life
Saving however this will hopefully assist in creating an
environment where they feel able to part of this organization and
welcome to join in if they wish. All participants will be given
information about ways they can join or be involved in a surf club
and if interested, Surf Life Saving is committed to helping them
find and join their nearest club.

NEWSFLASH: ON THE SAME WAVE BENEFITS FROM PAUL NEWMAN FOUNDATION
Paul Newman Foundation donates $113,000 to South Australian charities
The Paul Newman Foundation has donated to three South Australian charities as part of the Paul Newman's Own 25th anniversary celebrations.
The grants, totalling $113,000 will be used to assist with individual projects ranging from providing meals to elderly rural residents, to teaching beach water safety to culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and indigenous communities.
The charitable organisations in South Australia receiving funding are:
· Abbeyfield Society, Providing Meals for the Elderly (District of Barossa)
• Foundation 21, Down Syndrome Family Support (Greenacres)
· Surf Life Saving SA, On the Same Wave Program (Torrensville)
This year, a total of twenty-six charities from around Australia will each receive donations of up to $50,000 for nominated special projects from the Paul Newman Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to honouring Paul's vision and his legacy of generosity will see all the profits from his salad dressings, pasta sauces and mayonnaises continue to go to charity.
Including this year's grants, more than $12 million has been donated to both large and small charities across Australia since the first Paul Newman's Own product landed on supermarket shelves 25 years ago, and over $US250 million to charities globally.
Newman always said he had never had a problem with using his celebrity status to promote his hugely successful quality food products, which is best, summed up in his tongue-in-cheek branding tagline - "Shameless Exploitation in the Pursuit of the Common Good".
Charities interested in finding out more about the Newman's Own Foundation should visit www.paulnewmansown.com.au for up to date application information and funding criteria details.
